Buying a good horse at auction is not all about breeze time: a 2yo can look phenomenal in a preview, but how do you know what’s really under the hood? We offer a service that few can match: clockings, gallop out videos, and a dedicated website that make us your eyes and ears on the ground. We know you can’t lose days – or weeks – away from your primary business.
2yoSales.com isn’t about selling you a horse: we offer you peace of mind so that you know you’ve left the sale with the perfect, most complete racehorse for your needs.
Here are a few of my favorite examples of last year’s sales (split times are from our own watch)…
A Toe By Three | OBS March #416 worked in splits of 10.16, 21.36, 34.30
Big, strong-looking colt made a favorable impression galloping out, making no noise and striding out well. We did our standard operating procedures for a prospect: inspection, vet out, and (critically) checking the horse’s medication history. Three days before the breeze, the colt had received medication for colic. This allowed us to talk with the consignor (Southern Chase Farm) and they were very forthcoming that they had considered scratching him out of the sale. For the horse to work that well despite being that sick so close to his preview, only made us appreciate him more.
Peter Miller eventually outbid our clients in the ring and the colt would go on to a 4-1-1-0 record, including a near miss for third in a stake on the competitive Southern California circuit.
Mr. Prankster | OBS June #131 worked in splits of 9.99, 20.88, 33.11, 47.43
Small, but very well put together colt worked lights out on a very hot day: we loved him despite his size and that he was a neat, good mover and was sure to be a winner. If there was one question mark it was that we heard a slight gulp for air on the gallop out; however, the colt passed two rigorous scopes with flying colors: he had a big airway with no ulcers and didn’t entrap.
Because he was bought back for $8.6k as a yearling and it didn’t possess a particularly commercial pedigree, we were hoping to “steal” him for $30k. We had a strict budget of $38k from our client and, in the ring, went head ‘n head with Thomas Conway until he topped us with a final bid of $40k.
Now named Mr. Prankster, the little colt that could has a record of 6-3-2-0 and is a multiple stakes winner after demolishing fields in the Prevue and WEBN Stakes at Turfway.
Quality Harbor | OBS June #531 worked in splits of 10.02, 21.62, 36.22
Leggy with a compact body, this good looking colt rocked his breeze and bounced back to the barn with even more energy. He had been a $19k buyback, which was explained to us by the consignor as due to a chip in the right hind ankle. It had been removed and they had x-rays to prove it had healed properly. In doing our due diligence, we asked our vet to take a full set of x-rays on the ankles: the results revealed an inoperable sist in the left hind ankle.
That, for us and our clients, was the deal breaker. We felt the left hind ankle would hurt his longevity as a racehorse. He was bought for $40k and broke his maiden in the debut at Parx on December 27th. However, he has not had a published workout since.
- – - There are so many more examples, including graded stakes placed Speightscity. We learned a valuable lesson with that colt: we had an offer on the table after he had RNA’d at the Timonium sale but didn’t have signed paperwork and he was sent to New York before we could get the deal done.
One of the best examples of how our information can save you money is a $100k Harlan’s Holiday colt who trains in Southern California. He went through the ring and the trainer who purchased him walked over to us after and said “I got here this morning – I haven’t seen anything back in the barns – do you have anything on the horse I just picked up?” Looking at our notes, the horse’s breeze time wasn’t bad but our notes only said in big, bold letters Bad breathing noise. We were met with “Crap! I didn’t scope him.” The colt isn’t a bad horse, but he has issues and is still a maiden after four starts.
As a relatively new company, we are incredibly proud of our success from those we have purchased: 3 winners from 4 to race, and nearly $190k in earnings. Those horses currently run in our Post Parade Racing silks.
